O is for Opening Day

Orioles fans, it’s that time of year. It’s opening day at Camden Yards, and more importantly, the 25th anniversary of your favorite ball stadium.

To catch you up, last season the Orioles fell to 81-81 last season, 3rd in the AL East. Set to make a big comeback this season, the first game is up against the Toronto Blue Jays, a strong competitor within the conference. It was a sellout afternoon at the Orioles game today, attendance reached 45,667 ! In the first of a two game series against the Toronto Blue Jays, it was an extra innings match up and the O’s came out on top.

The Orioles got ahead early, when 1st baseman Chris Davis hit an RBI single to send Seth Smith down to home plate. Immediately following, Mark Trumbo shot a double RBI out to right field, and Adam Jones made it across home plate, giving the O’s a 2-0 lead at the top of the 3rd. Pitcher Kevin Gausman was fantastic, but the Blue Jays got one on the board in the top of the 5th, courtesy of Kendrys Morales, the 1st baseman.

In comes Mychal Givens to replace Gausman in the 6th, but the Toronto gets another one down home, this time from Ezequiel Carrera. Entering the 8th, head coach Showalter replaces Givens with Brad Brach. Then in the 9th, the Orioles made use of their premiere closer, Zach Britton. Unable to get any hits off, the game headed to extra winnings. At the bottom of the 11th, Mark Trumbo (who lead the league in home runs last season), hit a walk off run and won the game for the Orioles. It was his 6th career walk off hit.

Monday’s 3-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays makes the 7th consecutive Orioles win on Opening Day. The Blue Jays will be back at Camden on Wednesday. Let’s go O’s.
